Safeguarding – Raising a Concern

Course Information

This course will concentrate on making a decision when the circumstances fall within Section 42 of the Care Act 2014, thus initiating a safeguarding enquiry. The adult's consent and capacity are integral to the decision to raise a safeguarding concern, and this is explored in detail. Consideration is given to what happens when consent is not met, and how the capacity act and the principle of best interest informs professional decision making.

When carrying out initial information gathering, you may need to consider the following:

  • Could the event(s) have happened as alleged? It may be necessary to ask the adult some clarification questions to gain an understanding of the allegation
  • Clarifying information given about an incident. For example, what was said, seen, responded to
  • Checking written records – care plans, files, communication books, rotas etc. Could the alleged source of harm and adult have been together / alone?
  • Consider if others, including children are or may be at risk
  • At times it may be necessary to discuss the incident with other members of staff. However, this should be done sensitively and only when appropriate to manage risk to the adult at risk or others. When this is necessary, you should remind staff about confidentiality
  • Checking files / records to see if previous records to identify past incidents, patterns, concerns, risks and strengths
